At Wimborne St Giles CE First School we love learning about history! Historical understanding fires children’s curiosity and imagination about who we are, where we have come from, where we have lived and where we might be going next. It connects Britain’s past with the present and the future and helps children make sense of our place in the world’s history.
We aim to provide a stimulating history environment, using artefacts, pictures, photographs, written documents and eye-witness accounts to enhance the children’s understanding. Children are taught to use resources effectively in order to draw their own conclusions about life in the past.
Our younger children explore history through personal experiences and stories. As the children get older, they learn about life in more distant times.
Children are given opportunities to respond to history in different ways. These may include role-play, independent research, music and dance, stories and discussion, visitors into school and trips to local places of historical interest.
