  • A day that was 'Out of this World'!

Fri 06 Jan 2017 Mrs Hill

On Friday 6th January, mysterious things began to happen in and around the school as we launched this term’s topic; ‘‘To infinity and beyond!’. The hall was transformed into a Planetarium and children were taken on an exciting Space Adventure, exploring the stars and the planets in our universe -they even had the opportunity to handle a meteorite!

During the day, we also investigated an alien space ship which had crash landed onto the school field! We gathered evidence to test our theories about what might have happened and looked for clues that were on the crash site. We also had a go at designing our own rockets and then ended the day with a grand launch on the field. (I think the shrieks of excitement may have been heard as far as Wimborne!)

Parents also joined us for the morning as part of our ’Fly on the Wall’ Friday as we begin to explore this very exciting topic—thank you to all of you who came along to support on the day.

Our main aim was to inspire a sense of awe and wonder in the children and to encourage them to start thinking scientifically; to make predictions and collect evidence to test their ideas. We spent a lot of time asking ‘What if?’ and ‘What do you think...why?’ The children were absolutely brilliant and really impressed us with their knowledge and ability to experiment and learn through trial and error!

We really had a fantastic time and I’ll leave the final word with one of our members of Ash class:

“This is the funnest day ever!” (Thomas, Reception)
