• Polar Fun Day: 'The Big Freeze'!

  Today we were visited by a real life Polar Scientist who had come back from the very top of the world to tell us all about life in Arctic! We started off the day with a short presentation about life on the island of Svalbard and all of the incredible wildlife that can be found there, including reindeer. We saw photos that had been taken first hand of walruses, seals, arctic foxes and polar bears! We thought it was amazing that for three months of the year it is never dark and for three months of the year it never gets light! 

   

  Afterwards we took part in our first activity which was called 'Blubber Gloves'. We learned how blubber (in our case, lard!) helps to protect animals in the Arctic from extremely cold temperatures. We couldn't believe that when we were wearing our 'blubber glove' we couldn't feel the cold at all. 

   

  Our next activity was called 'Gloopy Glaciers'. During this we learned how the polar ice is melting which can cause problems for creatures, such as seals which are born on the ice. We created our own mountains and glacier 'gloop' to see how the ice melts. This was great fun! 

   

  Finally we learned how it is important to be very prepared for a trip to the Arctic. We investigated the equipment that you would need to take with you on an expedition and got to try on some of the kit! 

   

  The day was such a brilliant opportunity to find out more about the Arctic and what it would be like to live there, about the amazing creatures that inhabit the Arctic circle, the impact of climate change and what we can do to help. We were also really inspired by Robynne and her passion for her job as a marine biologist. Who knows, one day it might be one of us exploring life in 'the freezer'......  (Photos below)
